From making hasty decisions to getting into fights, impulsivity can cause harm to yourself and those around you. In addition to undermining relationships and your overall sense of well-being, impulsive behaviors can also lead to financial and legal harm if left unchecked. Fortunately, there are treatments that can help bring impulsivity under control, including psychotherapy, mindfulness training. and pharmaceutical drugs. Understanding Impulsivity According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders  (DSM-5), impulsive behaviors are a hallmark of BPD. Impulsivity is broadly defined as actions without foresight that are poorly conceived, prematurely expressed, unnecessarily risky, and inappropriate to the situation. Impulsivity is associated with undesirable, rather than desirable, outcomes.?? People who are impulsive are commonly described as being rash, hot-headed, unpredictable, or unstable. It is, in fact, the instability that best characterizes BPD as a disorder. People with BPD typically suffer from feelings of inadequacy that manifest with unstable emotions, unstable behaviors, and unstable relationships. They are quick to lash out at anything considered a slight and will often fail to recognize how those emotions are unreasonable or excessive. In psychological terms, impulsive behaviors are inherently inappropriate either in terms of scale or potential risk. A person with BPD is less likely to take into account potential consequences  and will often turn to self-harm behaviors (like binge eating or excessive drinking) as a means to cope. However, impulsive behaviors are not, in and of themselves, diagnostic of BPD. It only when the behavior is pervasive, detrimental, and interferes with a persons ability to function normally that BPD may be considered.?? ?Impulsivity should not be confused with a compulsion, in which a person recognizes the behavior is abnormal but cannot stop it. With impulsivity, the person will act out without inherently recognizing that the behavior is abnormal. Examples There are many different types of behavior that can become impulsive with BPD; each situation is different. There are, however, themes and scenarios that are common among people with BPD: Oversharing of emotionsOverspendingOver-apologizingQuitting a job suddenlyFrequent emotional outburstsMeaningless or risky sexJoining and quitting a lot of groupsJumping to conclusionsClearing out belongings to start anewConstantly turning over a new leafAbruptly changing or canceling plansInability to receive criticism without affrontBinge eating or drinkingThreatening to harm othersSelf-harmSelf-mutilationDestroying propertyEscalating confrontationsPhysical violence Causes No one can say for sure what causes BPD and, more specifically, what causes impulsivity in BPD. There is some evidence that BPD is triggered by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly if the trauma occurred in childhood.?? Studies into behaviors in twins have suggested that genetics may play a larger role in BPD than imagined. It is believed that a genetic error on chromosome 9 may be linked to features of BPD, including the partial inheritability of impulsive aggression.?? Mutations like these may alter the otherwise normal production of serotonin and dopamine, the neurotransmitters associated with mood and cognition. In people with BPD, impulsivity may also be closely tied to dopamine receptors on the brain itself, according to research from Vanderbilt University.?? If these receptors are impaired, particularly on the frontal lobe of the brain where logical decisions are made, a person may have less capacity to think things through before acting. The same faulty receptors may explain why people with BPD often have feelings of emptiness and self-loathing characteristic of depression. Without the means to effectively receive and transmit the dopamine signals, a person is less able to achieve self-control or sustain a sense of emotional well-being.?? It is this combination of environmental, genetic, and physiological factors that likely create the perfect storm for the development of BPD and BPD-associated impulsivity. Diagnosis No single test can confirm whether your impulsive behavior is the result of BPD or some other condition. If BPD is suspected, a doctor will perform a psychological exam to determine whether the body of symptoms are consistent with BPD as outlined in the DSM-5. To this end, a person must meet the two major diagnostic criteria for the disorder: An impairment of personality functioning, either in terms  of poor self-image and self-criticism or instability of goals, aspirations, values, or career plansAn impairment of interpersonal functioning, either in terms of a lack of empathy (due to negative attitudes and hypersensitivity) or the inability to sustain intimacy (due to mistrust, neediness, or the fear of abandonment) Both criteria must be met to be diagnosed with BPD. It is a complicated process requiring clinical expertise and one that is prone to misdiagnosis. To avoid this, all other possible causes must be explored and excluded, both psychological and physical.?? Borderline Personality Disorder Misdiagnoses Differential Diagnoses Impulsive behaviors are not exclusive to BPD. They are also associated with bipolar mania, often in tandem with grandiosity and a flight of ideas. During an acute manic episode, a person will often act impulsivity with little thought of the consequence. Spending sprees and hypersexual behaviors are two common examples of impulsivity related to bipolar disorder (BD).?? Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can also manifest with impulsiveness. Known as hyperactive-impulsive ADHD, the behavior is spurred by the childs inability to keep still or control inappropriate behavior. It is this lack of control, combined with a constantly shifting focus of interest, that spurs impulsivity.?? A similar thing occurs with substance abuse disorders, although the impulsiveness is typically exhibited under the influence of drugs, when craving drugs, or when actively seeking drugs.?? Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is closely aligned with BPD but differs in that there is a pervasive and persistent disregard for morals, social norms, and the rights and feelings of others. With borderline personality disorder, a person will have extreme emotions that they find hard to control. With antisocial personality disorder, there will be a marked lack of emotions. Physical causes of impulsivity may include an acquired brain injury or a neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimers disease or Huntingtons disease. Treatment While impulsive behaviors can be severe and pervasive, these symptoms can often be successfully managed with treatment. Many treatments for BPD have components that specifically target impulsivity. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) focuses on building skills that reduce your impulsive behaviors and increase your ability to think and reflect before acting. By using coping mechanisms to handle intense emotions, a person with BPD is better equipped to face situations without confrontation.?? Mindfulness, a skill taught in DBT, encourages you to stay in the moment. This can help you to remain more aware of your actions so you take the  time to consider consequences. Practicing this technique can help you to take the time needed to reflect on your options, empowering you to make more rational decisions about how to respond to events around you. Mindfulness meditation is a modality often used to support the training.?? Medications  like a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sometimes combined with a low dose of an antipsychotic may also help. This is especially true if your behavior is extreme and poses a risk to your safety or those around you.?? There are a number of drugs that specifically treat impulsive behaviors. Among the  atypical antipsychotics, Abilify (aripiprazole)  is seen to reduce interpersonal problems and impulsivity. Among the mood stabilizers, Lamictal (lamotrigine)  may help reduce impulsivity and anger, while Topamax (topiramate) may ameliorate impulsivity, anger, and anxiety.?? Medications are most effective when used in conjunction with psychotherapy  with a therapist who specializes in BPD.

Petruchios Method of Taming the Shrew - Literature Essay Samples

One reading of The Taming of the Shrew may cause women to shake their heads in disbelief of Kate’s changed behavior for the pleasure of her husband. A closer reading and an analyzing of the methods used by Petruchio in taming his wife, however, provide an opposing view. Perhaps Petruchio seems cruel in his treatment of Kate, but does he really have any other choice? In what other ways could he possibly have approached Kate and her temper? His method is unique and is obviously tailored with Kate’s demanding ways in mind. In fact, this uniquely crafted method chosen by Petruchio himself is not only perfect for â€Å"taming† Kate, but also proves his love for his wife.Petruchio, from the first mention of Kate, has an obvious desire for a challenge. One of the first things he mentions is that he is determined to find a wealthy wife. Hortensio points out, perhaps recognizing Petruchio’s desire for challenge and playing on that desire for a better chance to win Bianca, that Kate is so shrewd that he would not recommend her to such a good friend (1.2.62-3). If he really did not wish to recommend her, he would not have even mentioned her as a possibility. Petruchio, however, demands, â€Å"if thou know / One rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife / [†¦] / Be she as foul as was Florentius’ love, / As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd / As Socrates’ Xanthippe, or a worse, / She moves me not, or not removes, at least, / Affection’s edge in me† (1.2.64-72). Surely there are other wealthy women in the area that are more like Bianca, but Petruchio wants no other woman besides Kate. Recognizing that taming Kate will be a challenge, he longs for her.The method employed by Petruchio is unique. In his soliloquy, Petruchio explains this method to the reader. He keeps her hungry and unable to sleep well, but in a manner that appears that he is looking out for her best interests. As for the meat the y are to eat and the sheets on the bed, he finds â€Å"some undeservà ¨d fault† with each (4.1.188). He states that â€Å"this is a way to kill a wife with kindness, / And thus [†¦] curb her mad and headstrong humor† (4.1.197-8). By appearing to overprotect her and overindulge her, he will be annoying her to the point of obedience. Because Kate is so headstrong and does not respond well to criticism, this method is well tailored to her specific needs.Kate does not respond well to this method at first. She reacts angrily towards him, which only makes him act more kindly. He refers to her as â€Å"pleasant, gamesome, passing courteous, / But slow in speech, yet sweet as springtime flowers† (2.1.246-7). In return, she continuously throws out sarcastic replies. He gives her no option of whether to marry him or not, but simply walks away from her stating that they will marry on Sunday, acting as though she has agreed (2.1.325). When the two are getting married, he shows up in old clothes and even swears at the priest during the ceremony (3.2.155-63). After the wedding, she attempts to defy him by stating that she will remain behind at her father’s house for the marriage celebration while he returns home. He does not allow her to linger, however, and on their way home he even leaves her fallen horse on top of her while cursing at the servant for allowing it to happen rather than helping her. This causes even his servants to question whether he is not shrewder than she (4.1.76). Her defiance and anger, she soon realizes, will get her nowhere. She soon realizes that she simply needs to agree with anything he tells her, even if she knows that he is wrong, in order to find freedom. One may question whether Kate is merely acting the part of a submissive wife in order to get what she wants. This is most likely and almost certainly her plan. After attempting to resist him and by being defiant, she realizes that she will not be able to continue in this manner. Instead, she comes to the realization that it is better for her to agree with him, if only to please him. Her transformation comes on her way to her father’s house. She states, after a short disagreement about whether the sun or moon is out, that if Petruchio says the sun is out then â€Å"henceforth I vow it shall be so for me† even if it truly is the moon (4.5.15). She realizes that by simply agreeing with him, or at least pretending to agree with him, he is much nicer and easier to please. Petruchio may appear to be cruel in his treatment of Kate, but it is most likely an act. His servants are surprised to see how he is acting, proving that he does not normally act like this. For example, Nathaniel asks, â€Å"Peter, didst ever see the like?† to which Peter replies, â€Å"He kills her in her own humor† (4.1.169-70). He tests her new found submissive nature by telling her that the man approaching them on their way to her father’s is a maiden. She humors her husband by praising the man’s feminine features and only apologizes for herself when her husband points out that the traveler is indeed a man.The method itself also appears cruel, but perhaps it is the only choice he has. Kate may have never responded to any other method. First, to be beaten into submission usually only causes the victim to become timid and terrified of the abuser. Had Petruchio beaten Kate, she would have hated him and would have never become the woman he wanted her to and knew that she could become. Second, Kate proved that she cannot be taught like the average person. After trying to teach her music, Hortensio states that she will make a better soldier. When her father asks why this is, Hortensio replies:I did but tell her she mistook her fretsAnd bowed her hand to teach her fingering, When, with a most impatient devilish spirit,â€Å"Frets, call you these?† quoth she, â€Å"I’ll fume with them.†And with that word she struck me on the head, [†¦]While she did call me rascal, fiddler,And twangling jack, with twenty such vile terms (2.1.150-9)It is obvious through this experience that she does not have the patience of the average person to learn in an average way. Finally, if she had been allowed to continue in her ways – even while others hoped that she would grow out of her shrewdness – she would have never changed. Her father does not know what to do with her or how to handle her because it has gotten so out of hand. He even warns Petruchio to be prepared for â€Å"some unhappy words† from his rebellious daughter (2.1.140). By exploring the different methods that could have been used, it becomes clear that Petruchio’s method is the only one that would work with Kate. Some may argue that Petruchio’s goal is to make Kate more like Bianca, but this is not the case. Bianca is conniving in her own way and not t he submissive wife that Petruchio is trying to make Kate. Bianca pretends to be absorbed in her studies, as when she tells her father, â€Å"My books and instruments shall be my company, / On them to look and practice by myself† (1.1.82-3). Although it is impossible to know for sure whether she has any intentions of studying, one may argue that she only agrees to make her father happy. Later when Lucentio is â€Å"teaching† her, he tells her who he really is and that he is not a teacher. Unable to face Hortensio and tell him that she is not interested in him – such as Kate would have done – she allows him to continue his failing attempt to play his instrument. She even reads aloud his notes scale in which he makes each note an acronym proving his desire for her (3.1.72-7). Once again, however, she is unable to tell him that she loves another, but instead simply states that she does not like improved scales and that the old one suits her best (3.1.78 -80). By the end of the play, it is obvious that Petruchio has succeeded, yet Kate has won a battle of her own. His plan to make her submissive appears to him to have worked, but Kate finds freedom in being submissive. She encourages Bianca and the widow to also follow suit and â€Å"place [their] hands below [their] husband’s boot† in order to show their submissiveness (5.2.183). She degrades her own previous behavior and asks: Why are our bodies soft and weak and smooth, Unapt to toil and trouble in the world, But that our soft conditions and our hearts Should well agree with our external parts? [†¦] My mind hath been as big as one of yours, My heart as great, my reason haply more, To bandy word for word and frown for frown (5.2.171-8).She recognizes that she lives in a society that places specific demands on her as a woman, as does Petruchio, and eventually matures to the point that she can accept those demands. She tells the women that although sh e used to fight the way things are she now realizes that â€Å"our lances are but straws, / Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare, / That seeming to be most which we indeed least are† (5.1.179-81). If women would only submit to their husbands, accept their own weaknesses, and allow their husbands to provide for them, then there is freedom. Petruchio is obviously pleased with her speech, that he did not force upon her, and invites her to bed (5.2.190). Apparently, her submissive behavior is a turn-on to her husband and impresses her father to the point that he agrees to give Petruchio a second dowry for a second, or changed, daughter. Through the entire process of taming Kate, however, Petruchio genuinely proves his respect, and ultimately his love, to her. First, if he does not love her he would not bother with changing her behavior. If the only reason he wants to change her is to please society, he could simply lock her up in the house and rarely allow her in the public view. Second, as mentioned before, he does not resort to beating her into submission, but still respects her as a person. He asks her to kiss him in the streets, but does not force her to (5.2.134-7). Once again, he invites her to bed. He also refers to his and Kate’s relationship as a marriage and the other two – Bianca and Lucentio and the widow and Hortensio – as failing marriages since there is no submission from the women (5.2.191). In return, Kate also respects him, and as her last speech proves, loves him. Although Petruchio may seem cruel throughout his â€Å"taming† of Kate, he really has her best interests in mind. He sees her potential and helps her fulfill that. Kate puts up a struggle for quite a while until she realizes she cannot change her situation. If she just accepts her position as the submissive wife, however, she will be respected by her husband and provided for. Her speech at the end reveals to the reader a compl etely transformed Kate that appreciates her husband and respects him properly. Whatever it is that may come to mind, you might not realize the beneficial impact that participation in theatrical programs can have on just about anyone. I myself have gained from participation. The benefits of theater are many and can range from developing personal and professional skills, to conquering shyness, and even to therapeutic applications. In order to discuss the multiple benefits that theater has to offer, I must first describe briefly what exactly is†¦show more content†¦I have learned first-hand how to enable the audience to hear the actors through audio techniques, microphone wiring, and sound board operation. If you find more enjoyment in enabling the audience to see the actors, then stage lighting set-up and operation can be learned thro ugh theater as well. Being able to see the actors and stage is fine, but making the actors looks good is even better; that is where creative drawing and design can be practiced by being on the costume, makeup, and set design teams. There are even opportunities for experience in marketing, merchandising and publication through intermission sales, ticket pricing and advertising. Believe it or not, theater is a great outlet for people to learn how to combat their shyness. An article by Rebecca Appleton, a writer for Dakota Digital Ltd. on news.cision.com, elaborates on the topic of shyness in children. The article explains that acting and drama classes help children to develop social skills as well as build up their self-confidence. The article even goes on to argue that these skills are essential to the children as they grow up. In fact, my experience in acting and theater has had similar effects in my social skills and confidence. The complexities of a human’s willingness to submit to another person’s will have intrigued mankind since the formation of societal groups. Only in recent history has there been any studies conducted which so completely capture the layman’s imagination as the obedience experiments conducted by Stanley Milgram. As one of the few psychological experiments to have such an attention grabbing significance, Milgram discovered a hidden trait of the human psyche that seemed to show a hidden psychotic in even the most demure person. Milgram presents his startling findings in â€Å"The Perils of Obedience†. Publication created a great deal of discussion, with one of the more vocal critics being Diana Baumrind, who details her points of contention in the†¦show more content†¦Prompted by this phenomenon, Stanley Milgram investigates this â€Å"potent impulse overriding training in ethics, sympathy, and moral conduct.† (Milgram 314) Milgram set up an ex periment in which he intended â€Å"to test how much pain an ordinary citizen would inflict on another person simply because he was ordered to by an experimental scientist.† (Milgram 314) Thereby, observations could be made of how long a person would continue to inflict pain. â€Å"To extricate himself from this plight, the subject must make a clear break with authority.† (Milgram 315) The basic premise of the study being to learn how an ordinary person reacts when put under pressure to cause great physical harm to a stranger through a series of simulated electrical shocks. However, the subjects are under the impression that they were participating in a study of memory and learning. This is where Diana Baumrind takes issue with Milgram’s study. She feels that â€Å"by volunteering, the subject agrees implicitly to assume a posture of trust and obedience.† (Baumrind 326) Basically, Baumrind feels that the setting of a fairly innocuous sounding experiment i n a safe, controlled environment of a lab causes the subject to have a false sense of safety in the experimenter’s experience. While no other time period comes close, the novel we have been reading in class deals vigorously with dystopian society. 1984, by George Orwell, is a dystopian, fiction-based book that features a main character named Winston Smith, a girl named Julia, and many others who come together to make for a very intense storyline and an intriguing read. Berghahn has the under title Economy, Society, Culture and Politics and was first published in 1994 by Berghahn books. The used edition is the revised and expanded edition published in 2005 and summarizes the events in the ‘Kaiserreich’ (1871-1918). He taught in England and Germany before coming to Brown University in 1988 and to Columbia ten years later since then, he is Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia University. Moreover, he has published widely on modern German history and European-American relations. The book â€Å"Imperial Germany† is a comprehensive history of Germany and is thematically organized to provide data and information about major developments and the Bismarckian and Wilhelmine eras. The author expresses his theses and opinions in this book. Firstly, Berghahn? s position regarding the debates over the Deutschen Sonderweg is balanced and his main view about the German population is that it was characterized by pluralization and polarization. In particular, the society became more pluralistic after 1871 demonstrated by a more colorful and dynamic Kaiserreich. Berghahn demonstrated this richness and diverseness of the German population by looking at German? s society and culture. Polarization also played a main role in the Imperial Germany. In Berghahn? opinion, polarization is connected with another controversial which is whether or not the Kaissereich was in a deep crisis before World War I. In addition, he provides the reader with tables to support his data and information. The tables are good because they make it easier to understand the data and summarize the written perfectly. Additionally, he cites other people who are mainly historians as well and have published famous and generally accepted writings such as M. Kaplan, The Jewish Feminist Movement in Germany. Moreover, Berghahn also refers to researches by mention them after his thesis or/and statement. Another notable characteristic of Berghahn? s book is that he mentions counter theses. By mention them; the reader gets to know the different historical views and what diverse and numerous opinions historians have about the development of Germany (1871-1914). Additionally, to support his theses, Berghahn confutes counter theses by giving data, information and arguments which show that the other historians? theses are wrong. In other words, Berghahn uses other (â€Å"wrong†) theses to support his theses. The author also uses counter theses to introduce a new theme and to make the reader think about the argument more deeply. In addition, he uses a research and/or historian thesis which is from the past or only the beginning of a thesis to further develop his thesis up on the other thesis. Furthermore, Berghahn sometimes writes what a specific historian thinks about a topic without commenting it. In comparison to the other books? authors we have read so far, the author of the book â€Å"Imperial Germany; Economy, Society, Culture and Politics† writes differently. Firstly, he states his wn opinions and theses, whereas the other authors mainly provide information. Additionally, Berghahn provides a lot of tables at the end of the book as compared to no tables in the previous books. In contrast to some use of footnotes (other writers? publications) in previous books, in Berghahn? s book, you find footnotes everywhere and the book has 32 pages only for footnotes. Additionally, Bergha hn writes not chronologically like Blackbourn for example, he divides the part thematically. In conclusion, on one hand, the book was informative and I like that Berghahn mentions other historians opinions as well. In addition, the use of tables makes it easier to understand the data and he handles counter theses well. On the other hand, the book was hard to read and protracted because his sentences are not straight forward and clear and he uses a lot of numbers in his writings making it hard to follow. Additionally, I don? t like how the book is organized (thematically) because for me, I prefer reading of all the developments happened in one time period. In the novel, The Scarlet Letter written by, Nathaniel Hawthorne, love, lies, mistrust are a few of the many situations that confront his characters. In Boston Hester Prynne commits a sin of adultery landing her the punishment of wearing the scarlet letter A for the rest of her life. The man whom with she has an affair with is Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Roger Chillingworth is Hesters husband, and he will do anything in his power to make Dimmesdale repay for what he has done. The physical and metal guiltiness that Dimmesdale undergoes for not confessing the truth of being Pearls father leads him to death. The theme of the novel is sin, isolation, and reunion. Through out the novel Nathaniel Hawthorne uses setting, plot, and the characters to develop these themes. Hawthorne uses the setting to develop the theme of sin, isolation and reunion. In the market place one of the guards opens the jail cell and announces to all the spectators and to Hester shouting, Open a passage; and I promise ye Mistress Prynne shall be set where man, woman, and child may have a fair sight of her Come along! Madam Hester and show your scarlet letter in the marker place (Hawthorne 52). Hester is being displayed on the scaffold, which Hawthorne uses to show sin. While Hester is walking out of the jail a woman murmurs to one of the other women, This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die! (Hawthorne 49) This scene clearly shows isolation between Hester and the community. The setting of the scaffold scene also illustrates the reunion between Dimmesdale, Hester and Pearl. When Dimmesdale admits on being the father of Pearl to all the townspeople, this scene reunites Pearl with herself by making her normal. The forest is as well as a major setting that instigates sin. Isolation in the forest occurs when Hester meets Dimmesdale to achieve some reunion, but instead drives them selves further into isolation. The use of the settings greatly structures how the theme of sin, isolation and reunion came about. The plot is utilized to support the three themes. There are five basic parts to the plot: conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. On top of the scaffold Dimmesdale interrogates Hesters in revealing the identity of Pearls father. Not getting anything out of her he utters, Wondrous, strength, and generosity of a womans heart! She will not speak! (Hawthorne 66) This demonstrates her isolation from everyone and also breeds the conflict between Dimmesdale, Hester, and Chillingworth. If she discloses that Dimmesdale is her lover then Chillingwoth will not have any thing to hold over Hesters head. The rising action occurs with the continuing isolation of Hester and Dimmesdale and the questioning of Dimmesdale by Chillingworth. He does this because he assumes that it is not physical but mental and moral. This all leads to the conflict. The conflict happens on the scaffold when Dimmesdale breaks down and screams out for repentance and nearly gets caught by Mr. Wilson and Governor Bellingham. Then again in the forest Hester confronts Chillingworth telling him that she is going to reveal his secret to Dimmesdale. Later in the forest she confronts Dimmesdale telling him the secret that Chillingworth is actually her husband. There were few important questions which were asked to the employee such as regarding the present situation of the employees in the organization, any knowledge regarding past incidences associated with the labors or union, occurrence of employment opportunities and satisfaction level of the employees. The interviewee answers all these questions by sharing his personal experience. There was information provided by him regarding the present situation of the employees and the retail labor market. There are now increasing demand of the individuals who can handle either the front operations or the back-office operations. There is also need of individuals to handle the customer grievances both at the physical stores as well as online issues and queries. The retail market is offering extensive employment opportunities to the individuals to build their career in sales and marketing portfolio. There is continuous employment of new individuals in the organization at distinct stores of the company.
